Road Safety Strategic planning


Road traffic crashes result in the deaths of approximately 1.35 million people around the world each year and leave between 20 and 50 million people with non-fatal injuries. More than half of all road traffic deaths and injuries involve vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and passengers.

The young are particularly vulnerable on the world’s roads and road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29. World Health Organisation (WHO)

In 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the UN proclaimed the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.


The Australian Government has established the Office of Road Safety to provide national leadership and coordination to improve road safety outcomes. The Office is now the leader of the new National Road Safety Strategy for the decade 2021-2030.

NSW government

The state's Road Safety Plan 2026 sets out priority areas and actions to move towards achieving the target to halve road deaths and reduce serious injuries by 30 percent by 2030. NSW has set a target of zero fatalities and serious injuries on our roads by 2056 as part of Transport for NSW's Future Transport Strategy.

All these strategies use the Safe System approach to improve road safety. This approach takes a holistic view of the road transport system the Safer roads, Safer vehicles and Safer road users. It recognises that all components of the system have a role to play in helping to keep road users safe.

Wellbeing for Schools

The NSW Department of Education's Wellbeing Framework for Schools uses a strengths-based approach. This enables schools to build on the individual strengths of students and positions them to succeed and thrive throughout life.

Thrive: Road safety education, driver education and training.

Schools contribute to students' knowledge, skills and understanding of being a road user who is personally and socially responsible.
