Booking assignments 3 hours or less

If an assignment meets the Interpreting and translations guidelines, schools should select a provider in their area and book assignments directly as detailed below.

Metropolitan Sydney

For languages other than Auslan, schools can choose which of the two major providers they wish to book with. When choosing which service provider to use, schools should be mindful of the costs involved. TIS National charges a minimum of 1.5 hours whereas the minimum charge for Multicultural NSW is 2 hours.

For Auslan bookings, schools can book with the Deaf Society or Multicultural NSW.

Provider Assignments 3 hours or less

TIS National

Bookings with TIS National can only be made online.

You must register to use the TIS online booking form. The quickest way to register is to email tispromo@homeaffairs.gov.au and request registration for their online booking system. Your email should contain a signature block including the school name, your position, your phone number and email address. You must also provide the department's client code in the email. The client code can be found in the Interpreting and translation guidelines for schools (2019) or by phoning 7814 3124. TIS National will send you an email with a password activation link. Please click on the activation link. Once you have set up your password you can request your onsite interpreter booking.

When completing the TIS online booking form be sure to add the school name in the site details section in the building name field.

If you have difficulties using the TIS Online system please phone TIS National on 1300 655 820 and ask for help.

Multicultural NSW

Using Internet Explorer as your browser, complete the Interpreter request form (PDF 366 KB) (staff only) and email your request to Multicultural NSW at languageservices@multicultural.nsw.gov.au

You should receive confirmation of your booking within 48 hours of making your booking. If you haven't received confirmation please phone Multicultural NSW on 1300 651 500 to make an enquiry.

Deaf Society

Using Internet Explorer as your browser, complete the Interpreter request form (PDF 366 KB) (staff only) and email your form to interpreting@deafsociety.com.

You should receive confirmation of your booking within 48 hours of making your booking. If you haven't received confirmation please phone the Deaf Society on 02 8833 3611 to make an enquiry.

Hunter New England

Schools in the Newcastle and Hunter areas should check with the following providers to see if their needs can be met. Please note, TIS National and Multicultural NSW do not supply interpreters to these areas.

Hunter New England Area Health

This organisation provides interpreters to schools in the Newcastle and Hunter area. Some interpreters can be sourced through this provider for other regional areas, for example Tamworth, Armidale and Grafton. Not all languages are available and some schools are not located in areas where interpreters are available. Auslan is available from this provider.

This organisation can supply Auslan interpreters to some locations in the Hunter and Newcastle area and to some other regional locations.

Wollongong

Schools in the Wollongong area should check with the following providers to see if their needs can be met.

Provider Assignments 3 hours or less

Wollongong City Council

Wollongong City Council can provide some onsite interpreters in the local area and surrounds. Not all languages are available and some schools are not located in areas where interpreters are available. Please note Auslan is no longer available through this provider.

Phone 02 4227 7650 during the contact hours shown below prior to booking to check if your needs can be met. To book:

  • Go to the Interpreter Service page.
  • Click on the +How to book link under the Bookings heading
  • Scroll down and click on the Book an interpreter icon.
  • In the new window, type the department's user name and password. These are provided in the Interpreting and translations guidelines (PDF 313KB) (staff only). Then follow the prompts to make your booking. Please ensure you enter the actual school location in the booking form.
  • You should receive a confirmation email after making your booking. If you don't receive confirmation call the Council on 02 4227 7650 or email them at interpreters@wollongong.nsw.gov.au
  • Contact hours are on Mondays between 9am-12pm, Wednesdays 2pm-5pm and Fridays 9am-12pm.

Deaf Society

This organisation cannot provide Auslan interpreting services to all schools in the Wollongong area. Teleconference or skype might be another way to access Auslan interpreters when onsite interpreters are unavailable.

Regional NSW

Unfortunately there are very few onsite interpreters available in areas outside of Metropolitan Sydney, Hunter New England and the Wollongong area. There is a very limited number available in the following areas: Bathurst - 1 Bengali interpreter; Albury - 1 Croatian, 1 Slovenian and 7 Nepali interpreters. To access these interpreters bookings must be made through TIS National.

Schools should use the telephone interpreter service if onsite interpreters are not available.

Auslan onsite interpreters

If you require an Auslan interpreter, please check with the following service providers to see if local interpreters are available. You can also check to see if other platforms such as teleconferencing can be used.
