Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability

On 5 April 2019, the Prime Minister announced the establishment of a Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.

The NSW Department of Education supports the establishment of the Disability Royal Commission and is committed to proactive engagement.

The Disability Royal Commission is being led by the Hon Ronald Sackville AO QC, and supported by six other Commissioners: The Honourable Roslyn Atkinson AO; Ms Barbara Bennett PSM; Professor Rhonda Galbally AC; Ms Andrea Mason OAM; Alastair McEwin AM; The Honourable John Ryan AM.

The Disability Royal Commission will consider what governments, institutions and the wider community should do to prevent people with disability from experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Central to the Disability Royal Commission will be people with disability themselves, coming forward and sharing their life experiences as well as their families and carers, and is seeking to learn from them.

The outcomes of the Disability Royal Commission will form the pathway for governments, providers of services, and the community to follow for people with disability to live safely and with dignity as valued members of our community.
