How-to guide for parent app

The NSW Education Parent App has new features making it even easier for parents and carers to stay in touch with their child’s school. This is a guide about how to make the most out of your parent app.

Download the app in the Apple Store or Google Play.

Onboarding

When you first launch the app, you will be presented with a number of onboarding screens to educate you about the app’s functions. The sections are:

  • News and Newsletters: Get the latest updates and newsletters from the school(s) you are following.

  • Calendar: View a calendar of past and future events (weekly or monthly).

  • School essentials: Access the latest apps for your school, contact the school and make payments.

  • Stay notified: Let school(s) notify you of news and events by tapping the ‘Okay’ button.

  • Connect your Service NSW account.

  • Choose language: View translated content, eg: Chinese (Simplified).

Please note: There may be some small variances between iOS and Android versions, eg: Menu options.

Setting up your school(s)

Following the onboarding screens, you will be prompted to add a school.

Type in the name of the school, eg: The Rivers Secondary College (Kadina Campus). You’ll be asked if you wish to add another school or tap ok. Tap ‘Ok, let’s go’.

Repeat process to add a second or third school. There is no limit to the number of schools that can be added.

Home screen

You’ll be welcomed to a home screen which features a news carousel of the latest items from the department and schools. It also displays a list of the sections outlined below.

News feed

This section holds your school’s news items. If you tap on an item and the ‘Global’ symbol at the top right corner you will go to the school's website for the full article.

The app is a companion app to the School's Website Service. You can also share news items by tapping the ‘Share’ symbol.

My schools

In this section you will see your chosen school(s) and its operational status (a tick or “warning” symbol). Note: If status changes, you will get a notification on your home screen.

By tapping on 'School details' you get details such as phone number, email, directions, and website URL. 'School vouchers' opens the Service NSW website where you can see information about education and training.

Events (Calendar)

Here you find items that the school has published about upcoming events. By tapping on the date, you will see a list of event(s) on that date.

Click on the item to show details of the event including a link to a map of the location, and the option to add it to your personal calendar.

You can also receive a reminder of the event by tapping on the ‘Bell’ icon. A list of all incoming school notices can be found in your notifications inbox.

Newsletters

Find newsletters published by the school which are displayed in date order. Tap on a newsletter to open. There is also a Share and Zoom function for easier viewing.

Enrolment

You can access resources that will make enrolling your child easier such as Timeline to Enrolment, School Finder, and Start a new enrolment application.

Learning resources

This section features resources you can use at home to support your child with the current curriculum. Content is curated by schools using resources such as the NSW Student Learning Library.

Feedback

Users have the opportunity to provide feedback on the app’s performance which assists the department in improving the experience.

Translation app

The app is now available in several languages. Tap on Settings and under Information, tap on App language where you’ll find a list of languages, ie: Chinese (Simplified), Vietnamese and Korean. Tap on the desired language to activate.

Personalise your news

Personalise your news by tapping on the 'Triangle' symbol at the top right corner in the News section. You can filter feeds by school year by enabling or disabling the year.

You can also do additional filtering such as viewing information published only from the school or the Department of Education.

Make a payment

You can make a payment to a school, when it has enabled the feature, from the app. Go to the school you wish to make a payment to. Tap on ‘Make a payment’ which will take you to the Student details page. On this page, you will be presented with the current payment option available at your school.

App and user settings

You have the ability to “sign in or sign out” from your Service NSW account. In future, by remaining signed in, you will receive a richer experience with greater functionality only available to signed-in users.

In school settings, you also have the option to enable push notifications for each of the schools you follow. You can also remove a school by tapping ‘Remove school’.

To add a new school, tap ‘Add new school’.

Connect with Service NSW

You can sign in with Service NSW via the app. Note: When onboarding, you will be given the option to start the process. If you skip that, you can return later and sign in via the ‘Burger’ menu by tapping on the ‘Sign in with Service NSW’ button.

Alternatively you can go to ‘Settings’, tap on the ‘Connect account now’ button and enter your Service NSW email address and password where you’ll remain signed in.
