Choosing how to communicate

Clear and ongoing communication is essential to maintain your connection with your students.

Methods and channels

Ensure everyone knows how messages will be sent and what channels they should be checking - for example, email, digital learning platforms, school website, social media, phone, web conferencing tools. It is important that you follow the agreed school processes for making contact with students and parents including:

  • supporting access to teachers for learning support
  • EAL/D
  • student counselling support.

Tech support

It is also important that parents understand who can help them if they need technology support. Share this information clearly and regularly.

Regular contact

Parents or carers will be the go-between for many messages between teachers and students. Over-communicating is recommended to ensure everyone feels connected, supported, and confident.

Reaching your whole audience

Try to make instructions as clear and concise as you can, use plain English and check if you need translation services.
