Assessment dates

Annual assessment scheduled dates for schools according to school term.

The updated 2024 assessment schedule (PDF 97 KB) includes all assessments schools could be asked to complete during the calendar year, including:

  • department assessments
  • mandatory state and national assessments, item trials and field studies
  • other external assessment opportunities coordinated through the department.

  • These dates are correct at the time of publishing and may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. Check the relevant web page for more information relating to each assessment.

2024 assessments by term

Semester 1

Best Start Kindergarten Assessment

  • Weeks 1 to 6

NAPLAN familiarisation activities

Transition to Year 7 Assessment

  • Weeks 2 to 9
  • For individual students who did not complete Year 6 Check-in assessments in Semester 2 in 2023.

HSC minimum standard

  • Assessment window opens in Week 5 and is available through the year for Years 10 to 12. See the NESA website for details.

NAPLAN

  • 13 to 25 March

National Assessment Program – Civics and Citizenship (NAP-CC) main study

  • Weeks 2 to 4 (6 to 24 May)
  • Years 6 and 10 (select schools)

Selective High School Placement Test

  • Week 2 (9 May)

NAPLAN Item Trial

  • Weeks 3 to 6 (13 May to 7 June)
  • Select students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9

PISA Field Study

  • Weeks 3 to 6 (13 May to 7 June)

Semester 2

Check-in assessment

  • Weeks 2 to 5 (29 July to 23 August)
  • Years 7, 8 and 9

Opportunity Class Placement test

  • Week 2 (1 August)

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

  • Weeks 4 to 6

Check-in assessment

  • Weeks 6 to 9 (26 August to 20 September)
  • Years 3, 4, 5 and 6

VALID Science 6 and 10

  • Weeks 7 to 8

VALID Science 8

  • Weeks 3 to 4

HSC (written exams)

  • 15 October to 8 November

Note: For National Assessment Program (NAP) sample assessments, ACARA requires a representative sample of students in metropolitan and rural and remote locations. Sample sizes are typically small. Identified schools will be contacted directly.
