We have just celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day, a nation-wide celebration of Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. A guiding principle of the National Quality Framework (NQF) is that Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are valued. Fostering children’s understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures is particularly relevant to Quality Area 1 and the following resources will support educators to highlight and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Magabala books is Australia’s main publisher of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors, artists and illustrators, based out of Broome WA. Magabala books are led by strong cultural values and a strong passion for excellent and quality storytelling.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a place you can visit which showcase projects run by Indigenous literacy foundations, a national book industry that is committed to raising literacy levels in Indigenous communities, so all children across Australia have the same choices and opportunities.

Finally the National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature (NCACL) has produced a free database that allows educators to explore a range of children’s books and related teaching resources.
