VET Augmented Reality Welding

Augmented reality welding used within the VET Manufacturing and Engineering courses.

0:00 How much fun they'd be, more engaged using the virtual welders.

0:04 This could be a game changer.

0:05 It gave me a lot more confidence to go into the welding Bay.

0:13 The virtual welding machines have been fantastic.

0:17 It allows the students to practise their welding skills without the inherent dangers of welding in reality so there's no smoke, there's no smell, there's no chance of burning, yet they get all the skills necessary.

0:30 It's definitely been a time saver. The good thing is we can develop a course on the machines and the kids can work till they finish the course on the machines and the kids can work until they've finished the course and we can actually go back and look at their welds and look at their feedback after they've done it.

0:40 All the graphics and that aspect of the VR welding is pretty realistic. You can't really tell much of a difference.

0:47 The machines allow you to just lay the beads down constantly so you don't have any materials wasted, you can improve it, see how you went almost instantly.

0:57 We can see what the kids see through the mask. Often when you're trying to teach it live, you can't actually see what they're looking at. Where now things like the replay function, we can actually rotate that around and show the kids what they should be looking at.

1:11 It's super fun to compare your scores with your friends.

1:14 It's more competitive with like other students, see who's supposedly the best, see who's going to top one another, after doing well on the machine and in class that's what made me want to do welding as a job.

1:27 I would definitely recommend schools if they have the opportunity to get a virtual welding machine. Solder Matic has been a game changer here for our school. Having two of them is great because you can have multiple students on them at the same time. You can have students involved in a formative assessment where they're learning from each other about what to do. You'll often hit the students giving feedback to them about, you know, move your arm this way, go faster this way.

1:47 The future of manufacturing in Australia is growing and I think for us to be able to be on board in being innovative in providing skills to students and being able to connect them with industry, that's just an amazing thing that the department has underway at the moment.

2:01 I really wouldn't teach welding any other way in a school environment. It allows for easier teaching, more efficient teaching and at the end of the day, we're here for students to achieve outcomes and that's what these welders do.
