Stage 5 Tourism (Australian Indigenous Culture)
0:00 This programme has been important for my son just because he doesn't really fit to the school curriculum. I feel like it's a much needed necessity in the school because my son in particular thrives better surrounding culture and language.
0:12 His name is River what Ian Gumbang is Binderay.
0:18 I see that cultural connection coming back in.
0:21 What I can say about the impact of the program, first and foremost, is that it increased attendance and the fact that students could learn about their own cultural sites, learn about the protocols involved in that, work with elders to be able to be experts on their own country, about their own country.
0:41 Alright, take some pictures of you guys so you can download it onto your computer when we get back to school.
0:48 The whole assessment was based around developing a tourism brochure for the local area, which incorporated the local languages and the storylines.
1:01 This is a step, I see, to see the students stepping out of their comfort zone.
1:07 We don't have any classes that teach us about our culture at school. So this is really good so I can get out and really learn about my culture.
1:15 And like it's a see like that how like things used to be see,
1:21 it's just nice out here, good to hang out with friends and better than being at school.
1:28 I could take people on tours and teach them the language that I've learnt, especially because, it's like our own language so it feels special.
The Certificate I in Tourism (Australian Indigenous Culture) program is now available to schools across Australia.
