Assistive technology

Assistive technology refers to any tool, device or system that allows your child to perform a task that they would otherwise be unable to do at school.

It can be low-tech, low-cost technology or in-built settings in consumer devices like an iPad, or more specialised devices, and it can help a wide range of students.

Some examples that might be used in your child’s classroom include:

  • software that reads text aloud to students
  • built-in settings that adjust a screen’s display
  • tools for magnifying text or images
  • speech to text tools that let students dictate what they want to write.

You, your child and your child’s teacher or other relevant school staff may think about using assistive technology to help support your child’s access to their school curriculum.

This process of using assistive technology can be a part of your child’s personalised learning and support, and be supported by the school learning and support team.
