Accommodation details

Accommodation may be available in Wentworth, Mildura or areas surrounding these towns (for example, Buronga and Merbein). The types of accommodation vary from 1 bedroom upwards – an idea of costs can be found by searching for rentals online in these areas. Share accommodation may also be possible. Two local real estates located in Wentworth are: Elders Real Estate (03 5027 3411) and Elstone Real Estate (03 5027 3177).

There may be services at Wentworth, but it would be recommended that a vehicle be essential. Current staff members live around the Wentworth/Mildura areas and drive to the school each day.

Previous Rural Experience teachers have chosen to stay in the city of Mildura (in Victoria) or Buronga (in NSW) and drive to the school each day.

Please note: Teacher Housing availability can depend upon a variety of factors, including vacancy status and potential priority offers to other staff with full time rural appointments. Teacher Housing Authority (THA) may not be able to confirm the allocation of properties until all applications have been received and processed. Applicants are encouraged to discuss property availability directly with THA. Participants of the Rural Experience Program are not eligible for the Housing Rental Subsidy but may rent a property (at market value) through the THA if available.

School details

Wentworth is situated at the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers in the Sunraysia region of Far West NSW. Wentworth Public School is a welcoming school that actively builds relationships with families and the wider community. While Barkindji is the traditional land on which we work, there are diverse cultural and language groups in our community.

Wentworth Public School's student population in 2024 is 100, with 46% of the students identifying as Aboriginal. Seven stage-based classes have been formed, with less than 20 children in each class and approximately 3 SLSOs to support our students each day.

At Wentworth, the school’s Strategic Improvement Plan has a strong focus on evidence-based literacy and numeracy instruction and providing all students with point of need instruction through differentiation, use of data and quality assessment. This work is supported by 1.2 FTE APCI’s. We also have a focus on authentic Aboriginal Education, community engagement, and whole school wellbeing programs.

The school has a well-established kitchen garden program and wellbeing is underpinned by our school values of Respect, Safety and Persistence. Students are also provided with a range of sporting and cultural extra-curricular opportunities.

Wentworth is close (25 minute drive) to the Victorian regional city of Mildura (population approx. 50 000), which provides employment, sporting opportunities and health services that supplement that which is available locally.

The school has a strong partnership with other local schools in the Murray-Darling group and with the local pre-school. Wentworth Public School has a range of beginning and experienced staff, both permanent and fulfilling temporary contracts. They are supported by a wide range of professional learning opportunities, both departmental and those that arise locally throughout the year.

Our Facebook page has many photos of the school and its layout.

We encourage you to contact our current rural experience teacher Lachlan Craig, from Lethridge Park Public School in Western Sydney, or former placement teacher Ellen Macdonald from Maitland Grossman High School, who have both made the move and experienced a rural exchange to our lovely part of the world.
