Rural Experience Program

The Rural Experience Program provides an opportunity for permanent teachers to take part in a short-term placement in a Rural and Remote school.

Subscribe to our email alert list for opening dates and program announcements.

Placements are created by principals and are fully or co-funded by the Rural and Remote Education initiative in cooperation with placement host rural schools. Placements are extra to the establishment at the host rural school. An allowance of $500 per week is available to teachers for the duration of their placement.

Teaching in NSW rural and remote schools

Under the Rural and Remote Education Strategy (2021 - 2024), the department is implementing a number of initiatives to support rural and remote schools.

At Teach NSW teachers can explore rural and remote destinations (including the benefits and incenties and subsidies, allowance and bonuses available to rural teachers) and find out more about other available programs.

Positions in rural schools are regularly advertised through JobFeed and IWorkForNSW. The HR Policy team (hrpolicy@det.nsw.edu.au) can assist with enquiries relating to benefits and incentives.

Qualified teachers from other systems, states or overseas locations can find details on how to teach in NSW public schools at Teach NSW.

Pre-service teachers

Professional experience placements in rural and remote schools are available to eligible final year pre-service techers. Information about this can be found on the Pre-service teacher resources page. For further details, email ProfessionalExperience@det.nsw.edu.au
