Rural Experience Program

The Rural Experience Program provides an opportunity for teachers to take part in a short-term placement in a Rural and Remote school.

Placements are created by principals and are fully or co-funded by the Rural and Remote Education initiative in cooperation with placement host rural schools. Placements are extra to the establishment at the host rural school. In addition to their substantive salary, participating teachers will receive a program allowance consisting of $500 at placement commencement and $500 per week during their placement period.


For placements commencing from Term 1, 2023:

  • Principals of Rural Experience Schools create placements within their schools (Term 2, 2022)
  • Interested teachers apply for placements (Term 2&3, 2022)
  • Offers made to successful applicants (early Term 3&4, 2022)
  • Placements commence from Term 1, 2023

Under the Rural and Remote Education Strategy (2021 - 2024), the department is implementing a number of initiatives to support rural and remote schools.

At Teach NSW teachers can explore rural and remote destinations (including the benefits and incentives and subsidies, allowance and bonuses available to rural teachers) and find out more about other available programs.

Positions in rural schools are regularly advertised through JobFeed and IWorkForNSW. The HR Policy team ( can assist with enquiries relating to benefits and incentives.
