Placement details

Terms 1 - 4, 2025 (Applicants can request a shorter duration in their application).

The Rural Experience Teacher at Pomona Public School will be offered numerous opportunities to express their areas of expertise as well as taking on a part-time teaching load.

Pomona has a K-2 and a 3-6 class covered by full time teachers, so the successful applicant will support them by taking both classes and teaching in your preferred areas. Your skills will be advantageous as we tailor our class planning to suit all staff in 2025.

You will enjoy a significant non-teaching load as well as ownership of your role within the classes. When not on class, you will help support the professional learning staff can participate in as well as providing teachers with additional time to achieve their tasks. As such, you will be highly valued as an integral and excellent part of our team. Three of our staff in 2024 have previously been Rural Experience Teachers, including the Principal and this year's applicant is incredibly useful to the team.

It is the Principal's intention to support our 2025 placement to visit other schools in our network, participate in up-to-date professional learning, and become a key person in all we do at Pomona Public School. Approval to teach K-6 is required.

Accommodation details

Pomona Public School is located in a rural area, just ten minutes from Wentworth, NSW and 30 minutes from Mildura, Vic. Other nearby towns are Dareton, Buronga, and Gol Gol, all of which have numerous rental options.

Teacher Housing may be available in the area and vacancies do occur from time to time. This can be applied for as needed. Current non-local staff members, live in Gol Gol and Mildura where there are many rental properties which are excellent quality and provide value for money. It may be possible to share accommodation with staff from another school. This possibility would have to be explored as teachers apply for local positions.

Driving to and from Pomona is very calm on good quality, high speed, country roads. For more information about accommodation options, please contact the Principal.

Please note: Teacher Housing availability can depend upon a variety of factors, including vacancy status and potential priority offers to other staff with full time rural appointments. Teacher Housing Authority (THA) may not be able to confirm the allocation of properties until all applications have been received and processed. Applicants are encouraged to discuss property availability directly with THA. Participants of the Rural Experience Program are not eligible for the Housing Rental Subsidy but may rent a property (at market value) through the THA if available.

School details

Pomona Public School is in a lovely riverside location and very close to Wentworth, which is where the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers occurs. Pomona is primarily a farming community with grapes and almonds being two of the major crops. The area has a rich history and many sites and places of interest are close by. The positive culture at Pomona Public School is wonderful. Students are always well behaved and committed to their learning and the community represent years of commitment to the school and the area. As a small school we connect with other small schools and the larger schools in our network for combined activities, excursions, camps and events. Last year's first combined schools Athletics Carnival was a fine example of how we connect in Sunraysia. All five participating schools expressed strong positive feedback about the event held at Pomona PS for the first time.

Student numbers fluctuate between 15 and 25, with several young families soon to join the school in future years. In 2024 we have 16 students, with seven in Years 3-6 and 9 in Years K-2. The small numbers make teaching opportunities explicit and highly enjoyable. We provide significant opportunities for students to participate in interesting excursions such as to the theatre and sport events in Mildura and to the Gol Gol Immersion Centre.

Mildura is the nearest large town and has everything a teacher could need by way of shops and services. It is a great place to live only 30 minutes from Pomona.
