  • Permanent employees who hold a substantive position as a teacher and meet the eligibility requirements in the Rural Experience Guidelines may apply for either of these placements.
  • Non-permanent employees (those on a temporary engagement / contract and casual employees) who meet the eligibility requirements in the Rural Experience Guidelines may apply for either of these placements.

Outdoor Education / Science Opportunity

Placement details

Terms 1 - 4, 2023 (Applicants can request a shorter duration in their application).

Role Description: The successful applicant will liaise and work with a mentor and like-minded teacher at Gol Gol Public School in the development and delivery of relevant science and environmental lessons which link to the curriculum. Part of the role will be to work with students and staff from Gol Gol and local schools including small schools and schools who are part of the City Country Alliance of Schools (CCA) on the Gol Gol Immersion Environmental site. The successful applicant will work in an outdoor education setting and will participate in a Lake Mungo experience and will help facilitate City/Country activities which focus on student leadership opportunities. This placement involves working with students in an outdoor environmental setting, with the support and guidance of a second full time teacher at the school, adjacent to the Murray River in Gol Gol. The successful applicant will develop leadership skills through involvement in working with CCA organisation to help plan student leadership activities, school visits to the Gol Gol Immersion Centre, helping to facilitate Zoom student leadership sessions and attend a CCA staff conference.

Additional Commitments: An openness to new opportunities, keen interest and enthusiasm in learning more about outdoor education and science in extending and developing curriculum is essential.

Desired Expertise: A willingness to work in a rural setting, liaising and developing skills alongside highly motivated staff. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of curriculum and willingness to engage in professional learning.

Accommodation details

Accommodation has not been an issue in relation to any placement to date. There are a number of options available to the successful applicant. The Gol Gol School has a number of parents who work in Real Estate. Accommodation ranges from houses to units, boarding, cabins at Holiday Parks, Teacher Housing. Google Mildura Real Estate Agents for a comprehensive list of Real Estate Agents. Individual or family accommodation can be organised. Options include one to four bedroom houses, apartments, flats, shared accommodation. I am confident that we could help find suitable accommodation and would be willing to assist in securing appropriate accommodation options. Rental is very reasonable in terms of cost. Please note: Teacher Housing availability can depend upon a variety of factors, including vacancy status and potential priority offers to other staff with full time rural appointments. Teacher Housing Authority (THA) may not be able to confirm allocation of properties until all applications have been received and processed. Applicants are encouraged to discuss property availability directly with THA. Participants of the Rural Experience Program are not eligible for the Housing Rental Subsidy but may rent a property (at market value) through the THA if available.

Mildura has extensive facilities including an airport, great shopping, restaurants, hospitals, fitness centres, Libraries, Arts Centre, established riverfront and recreational activities.

Gol Gol school has experienced staff, excellent facilities and motivated students. Gol Gol is committed to the Rural Experience Program, offering a meaningful rural opportunity.

The second Strategic Direction in the school plan has a focus on the further development of the Gol Gol Immersion Centre involving collaboration, partnerships and learning. Gol Gol has a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden, an Environmental and Cultural Immersion Centre, a School Band and supportive school community. We have well mannered, hard-working students and staff.

We have forged strong partnerships with a number of Metropolitan and rural schools through our City Country Alliance of Schools involvement.

Placement details

Role description: The placement will be tailored dependent on the skillset of the applicant. It could be having their own class, implementing intervention programs, RFF or opportunities to explore and lead whole school programs relating to our school priority areas. 

Additional commitments: Participation in extra-curricular activities based on interest is welcomed

Desired candidate expertise: 

  • Approval to teach K-6
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with all members of the school community.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and delivering high quality, differentiated teaching and learning programs with an emphasis on student engagement. 
  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement the Department's Aboriginal education policy to enhance quality outcomes for all Aboriginal students.
  • Commitment to student wellbeing
