  • Permanent employees who hold a substantive position as an Assistant Principal and meet the eligibility requirements in the Rural Experience Guidelines may apply for this placement.

Placement details

Terms 1 - 4, 2023 (Applicants can request a shorter duration in their application)

The placement is a non-teaching role where the successful applicant will provide support for class teachers with an instructional leadership emphasis. This will include collaboratively developing high impact teaching and learning programs with associated student performance measures.

Desired candidate expertise:

  • Proven successful experience in instructional leadership that has improved learning outcomes for K-6 students in numeracy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in, implementing successful change processes that has resulted in improved learning outcomes for K-6 students.
  • Demonstrated deep understanding of current research in effective instructional leadership and effective high-quality teaching in numeracy.
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of high quality differentiated professional learning that has enhanced teacher capacity in improving numeracy outcomes for K-6 students.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work alongside teachers to both model and improve teaching and assessment skills in numeracy.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the demonstrated capacity to contribute to building and strengthening a collaborative learning culture in a school setting.

Please note: Teacher Housing availability can depend upon a variety of factors, including vacancy status and potential priority offers to other staff with full time rural appointments. Teacher Housing Authority (THA) may not be able to confirm allocation of properties until all applications have been received and processed. Participants of the Rural Experience Program are not eligible for the Housing Rental Subsidy but may rent a property (at market value) through the THA if available.

Buronga Public School comprises a diverse population who champion inclusivity. Our school is located on the banks of the Murray River in the far west of NSW, where a rich cultural identity is valued and celebrated. Buronga is a border town to Mildura in Victoria. A number of staff and some students reside in Mildura.

Our diverse school enrolment of 88 students includes 45% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Currently we have five classes where we provide differentiated educational opportunities for students with a wide and diverse range of academic need.

We have a strong focus on evidence-based teaching and learning programs. Literacy and Numeracy programs are our priority with attention given to providing intervention to ensure students reach their full academic potential.

Extra-curricular priorities at Buronga Public School include a comprehensive and progressive Digital Technology Program where all students have access to a wide and varied range of devices and specialist teachers. We also offer Environmental Education opportunities to all students. The program incorporates outdoor and practical experiences where we work with other local schools and agencies.

As a small school we enjoy a positive school culture where collaboration between all stakeholders is valued and prioritised. We operate using a shared and agreed upon set of school values and corresponding behaviour matrix. We explicitly teach expected behaviours, social skills and implement emotional intelligence programs. We encourage and support an active Student Representative Council where we guide and promote student leadership and empowerment.

  • Non-permanent employees (those on a temporary engagement / contract and casual employees) who meet the eligibility requirements in the Rural Experience Guidelines may apply for this placement.

Classroom teacher placement K-2 at Buronga Public School.

  • Approval to teach K-6
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with all members of the school community.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and delivering high quality, differentiated teaching and learning programs with an emphasis on student engagement. 
  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement the Department's Aboriginal education policy to enhance quality outcomes for all Aboriginal students.
  • Commitment to student wellbeing

We welcome and encourage participation in extra-curricular activities based on interest. There is an existing opportunity to become involved with our environmental education program where students engage in an integrated approach to learning that uses a multitude of outdoor, hands-on opportunities combined with Aboriginal perspective and on country experiences.

This placement will offer additional professional learning days and RFF each term to engage with and learn about our local context and teaching in the Far West.
