The Welcome Experience is a new service supporting essential workers and their families who are thinking of moving or have made the move to a rural location. The service connects you and your family with local people and local resources to help you settle in and feel at home in your new community faster.

Placement details

Terms 1 - 4, 2025 (Applicants can request a shorter duration in their application).

Role description: The placement will be tailored dependent on the skillset of the applicant. It could be having their own class, implementing intervention programs, RFF or opportunities to explore and lead whole school programs relating to our school priority areas.

Additional commitments: Participation in extra-curricular activities based on interest is welcomed.

Desired candidate expertise:

  • Approval to teach K-6
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with all members of the school community.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and delivering high-quality, differentiated teaching and learning programs with an emphasis on student engagement.

Teacher housing may be available, private rentals are usually limited.

Please note: Teacher Housing availability can depend upon a variety of factors, including vacancy status and potential priority offers to other staff with full time rural appointments. Teacher Housing Authority (THA) may not be able to confirm the allocation of properties until all applications have been received and processed. Applicants are encouraged to discuss property availability directly with THA. Participants of the Rural Experience Program are not eligible for the Housing Rental Subsidy but may rent a property (at market value) through the THA if available.

School details

Broken Hill North Public School is located in the Far West of NSW and is one of six local primary schools. There are two high schools in Broken Hill. Our school community is committed to providing our students with a broad education, offering a variety of educational programs to ensure that each child reaches their potential, takes the individual needs of students into account, and holds staff and students to high expectations. Each child is encouraged to take pride in their own culture while appreciating the culture of others.

Broken Hill North Public School is located in the Broken Hill Group of Schools in the Far West of NSW. It is classified as a P2 with an average of 250 students over the past 5 years. The structure of the school comprises 5 support classes, 11 mainstream classes, 27% Aboriginal enrolment and a staffing entitlement of 30.252 which includes teaching and non-teaching staff.

Overall enrolments in the past four years have not fluctuated significantly. The school roll is significantly boy heavy and there has been a marked increase in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander enrolments from 24.7% in 2014 to 29% in 2024. 26% of enrolments in Special Education are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. We continue to run Aboriginal language groups with students in Years 5-6 to support students' cultural backgrounds. Students are supported by an Aboriginal Education Officer, Aboriginal SLSO's and teachers of Aboriginal cultural heritage.

In 2024 we have 41% of students listed on our National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) return requiring supplementary to substantial adjustments to their classroom experience. Our school's Family Occupation& Education Index (FOEI) of 159, which is significantly higher than the average of 100, reflects our school's socio-economic status.

Usage of the Health Hub by outside agencies has increased significantly over time. Each term, a minimum of five agencies have supported our students. We have as many as eight different agencies working with students at our school. A range of services were provided within the school including: occupational therapy, speech therapy, mental health services, early intervention services, and NDIS support. The following agencies utilised the health hub in 2021: Novita, Interhealth, Maari Ma, Silverlea, NDIS, UDRH, CAMHS and Catholic Care. We also have a long standing partnership with the University Department of Rural Health, which sees social work, speech pathology, and occupational therapy students placed at our school for their degrees.
