Students strive toward and achieve meaningful goals.

  • Write learning goals and instructions for each lesson in plain English.
  • Use calendars, reminders and visual routines to show students how to plan their time and achieve realistic goals.
  • Provide marking criteria with tasks so that students can self-assess.
  • Give younger students a visual rubric.

  • Deliver the same lessons in printed and digital form as students require.
  • Create opportunities to celebrate student successes. For example, encourage students to share an achievement or highlight for the week.
  • Celebrate success in a way that is meaningful to the student.
  • Give students choice in learning activities and how they demonstrate their learning. This will allow each student to use their strengths as a learner and help them avoid roadblocks.

  • Set realistic teaching and learning goals with students.
  • Encourage students to reflect and comment on their progress.
  • Provide timely and meaningful feedback. This could include a weekly phone call, WebChat or providing an individual feedback note with returned work.
  • Ask the students how they prefer to be contacted.
  • Create meaningful sequences of learning that build on prior knowledge.
  • Vary the work. Include group work, think-pair-share or individual tasks.
  • Provide activities that are reflective or analytical and require students to solve problems or build and create.
  • Allow students to take advantage of being at home by including applied learning activities – for example, interviewing family members, science activities outdoors, mathematics activities that include following a recipe.
