Chess

Chess is game that relies heavily on patience, planning, problem-solving, and a knowledge of position and geometry. Challenge your child or get them to challenge a friend to improve their chess-play ... and their skills as a mathematician.

Things you need

  • 2 players
  • Chess board.

The challenge

Challenge your child or get them to challenge a friend to a game of chess. The one who can think predict moves and anticipate consequences is more likely to come out victorious.

The conversation

Once the game is over, discuss successful and unsuccessful plays and strategies. These conversation starters are a great way to deconstruct a game that’s powered by maths:

  • "At what point did you realise you were going to win or lose the game? How did you know?"
  • "If we were to play again tomorrow, what would you do differently? Why?"
  • "Did you make a move that didn't go as planned? What did you miscalculate? What might you do differently next time?"

The career

The strategic thought process required to play chess is also applied in computer engineering, programming and other fields where complex problem-solving are commonplace. Tactical positioning is also incredibly valuable for careers in design, event planning, management, construction, medicine and military defence operations.
