The NSW Department of Education is supporting experienced professionals to become teachers, to help meet the needs of NSW public schools now and into the future.
The Mid-Career Transition to Teaching Program supports those with significant prior experience, including high-performing professionals, academics and subject-matter experts to complete a Master of Teaching (Secondary) or a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and enter a career in secondary teaching.
Participants will be given the opportunity to be employed at a school part-time as a paraprofessional whilst completing their teaching qualification.
Participants will be provided with:
- a $30,000 one-off training allowance
- support and mentoring
- a guaranteed permanent teaching position in a NSW public school on completion of study
- a $30,000 study completion bonus phased over the first three years of employment in a NSW public school
Successful applicants will commence their studies at one of the partner universities in early 2024. Visit the university websites for their session/semester dates.
Please note: applicants with international qualifications may also be required to submit their IELTS test results if requested by the university.
The below are entry requirements to the Mid-Career Transition to Teaching Program. Based on prior qualifications and experience, two entry pathways are available.
Please note: universities may have other requirements for course entry. We recommend that you check their website for full details.
Master of Teaching (Secondary) entry
Mathematics, Science, Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) teaching
This pathway may be right for you if:
- You have completed a recognised undergraduate bachelor's degree; and
- You are an academic of industry professional with at least 3 years industry experience in the last 10 years.

Bachelor of Education (Secondary) - Industry entry
Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) teaching
This pathway may be right for you if:
- You are an experienced industry professional or tradesperson with industry experience; and
- You have completed a trade apprenticeship or equivalent qualification

Financial support
- $30,000 one-off training allowance
- $30,000 study completion bonus
- Paid part-time employment whilst studying
