Eligibility criteria
To be eligible to apply for a School Counsellor in Training Program, an applicant must:
be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
hold a current NSW driver's licence and the ability to drive one’s self
be an approved teacher with the NSW Department of Education for full-time employment and have worked with the Department within the last 3 years in a casual, temporary or permanent capacity
meet the universities entry requirements
if currently completing a three-year sequence of undergraduate psychology, be eligible to enrol in an APAC approved Psychology Honours year (fourth year of psychology academic study) from semester 1, 2026 at the university of your choice and complete your qualification by the end of 2026
if currently completing the fourth-year sequence of APAC approved psychology, meet Charles Sturt University's entry requirements into the Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology), including Charles Sturt University’s independent application, interview and referees report process. Advice on applying for entry into the Masters program will be provided during the Department’s merit selection process
be willing to accept an appointment as a permanent full-time school counsellor in a NSW public school in an agreed area of workforce need on completion of your studies for a minimum period of three years.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to select individual Staffing Areas where you are prepared to accept an appointment on completion of your studies.
The Staffing Areas you are prepared to accept an appointment to are linked to the level of scholarship you apply for.
