Students, parents and teachers from St Ives Park Public School were encouraged to decorate bikes, skateboards and scooters in school colours before riding to school late last month for National Ride2School Day.

The school embraced the day, which promotes the importance of developing healthy habits from a young age.

St Ives Park Public School Principal, Caroline English, said the event was a wonderful way for students to celebrate health and fitness in a fun and safe way.

“Riding to school offers students the opportunity to positively participate in activity on the way to school, engaging with their peers and community on the way,” Ms English said.

“Our P&C encouraged students to decorate their bikes and scooters in school colours this year to advocate for active lifestyles.

“This is a terrific way for friends to ride to school together and for our community to keep important, constructive connections going.”

National Ride2School Day is Australia’s biggest celebration of active travel.

Student Representative Council (SRC) member and Year 6 student, Eamon O’Sullivan, said he rides to school most days.

“Riding to school helps students maintain a positive mindset and stay healthy. It’s a lot of fun,” he said.

Zoe Akkermans, SRC member and Year 6 student, said riding to school was a fun way to be outside and active.

“The physical activity is great for you and your health,” Zoe said.

“It also helps to develop an awareness of what is happening around you as you ride.”
