Girraween and Holgate public schools have been judged the most Cyber-marvellous schools of 2023.

The two schools shared the top prize in the annual 2023 Be Cyber Marvellous Challenge.

The challenge aligns with Cyber Security Awareness Month (October) and calls on students from Kindergarten to Year 10 to demonstrate what they know about online safety.

The competition has been increasingly popular since its inception in 2021 and last year the Cybermarvel team received a record 77 entries from across the state.

The Cybermarvel program is a joint initiative of education departments in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT, South Australia and the Northern Territory that aims to:

  • Build staff and students’ cyber safety awareness and skills

  • Inform parents and carers about how they can keep their families safe online

  • Encourage safe and positive online behaviours and experiences

The judging panel of teachers and cyber security experts were impressed by the quality of work and selected five winning entries across Girraween and Holgate public schools.

The judges said the two schools demonstrated originality, relevancy, creativity and leadership in their videos, posters and a website.

The Holgate participants recorded a video at school in which they enacted a story of a young female YouTuber who learns how to deal with hate online with the support of a trusting adult.

Girraween students have built an exceptional website with fun cyber facts, videos, information about threats and scams and recommendations on cyber hygiene practices. They have also created worksheets for teachers.

The winning entries are available at Be Cyber Marvellous 2023 Challenge.
