Public education in St Ives is ripe with opportunity, with new principals arriving at St Ives public and high schools.
Tracey Casey, former principal at Sydney Secondary College, Leichhardt Campus takes the reins at St Ives High School, while Kelly McGowan joins St Ives Public School from her role as Deputy Principal at St Ives North Public School.
Between them, they have more than 50 years’ experience in the classroom and in leadership positions.
Mrs Casey said a positive and inclusive school culture were key to an excellent school.
“I’m keen to make sure students and staff have a strong connection to St Ives High School so the students can do their best learning,” Mrs Casey said.
“An inclusive and positive culture in the school provides a strong foundation for excellence.”
Mrs Casey believes where such an environment exists, students flourish academically and likely reach their potential.
Next door at St Ives Public School, Ms McGowan is also bringing a fresh set of eyes and enthusiasm for new possibilities.
“We're a comprehensive primary school and we value the education of the whole child,” Ms McGowan said.
“The teachers here are fabulous, and the students are so engaged.
“As the new principal, I’m aiming to keep that excitement for learning and make sure our students are accepting of everybody and can work in harmony.”
With the two schools only separated by a fence, both new principals look forward to greater opportunities for collaboration.
“Peer mentoring style connections are incredibly valuable, including enrichment opportunities for the primary students,” Ms McGowan said.
With St Ives High School students already volunteering at the primary school as part of the Duke of Edinburgh program, further opportunities are possible.
“While I’m getting to know the school and community, I know that our proximity to each other gives a great opportunity to work closely with Kelly and her teachers,” Mrs Casey said.
For parents, the two schools working closely together will make for a seamless transition from kindergarten through to Year 12.
