Stewart House School students have created some exceptional art works to contribute to the Weaving Stories project as part of the Gai-Mariagal Festival.

Relieving Principal Tom Angus said the works would be displayed as part of an installation at Curl Curl Creative Space on 25 July, in partnership with Northern Beaches Council.

“The weaving pieces represent Dhinawan (Emu) Dreaming, which is tied into the ‘Sky Spirits’ theme,” he said.

The emu weavings were developed under the guidance of the school’s Aboriginal Education Officer and expert Student Learning Support Officers and were created by visiting students from the Port Jackson and Liverpool areas at the end of Term 2.

“The drawing, weaving and designing that took place is truly remarkable and all students should be proud of their efforts in creating these pieces and celebrating NAIDOC,” Mr Angus said.

Stewart House School is a residential school, working in partnership with Stewart House Charity, for students who are in need of a break from their current circumstances, whatever that may be.

Students from Year 2 to Year 8 from across NSW and ACT, including many from regional and remote areas, are offered a 12-day residential experience across the road from the ocean at North Curl Curl.

These students may be carers of other family members, in difficult economic circumstances or in an emergency situation who need some time out and a little extra support.

“The Stewart House program is centred on self-awareness, emotional regulation and connecting with others, combined with engaging excursions to places such as Taronga Zoo and Aquatic Centres, where students experience something different to a normal school day,” Mr Angus said.

“We aim for students to return to their home schools with a renewed sense of confidence to embrace whatever challenges come their way.”
