The opportunity to work deeply with the community is galvanising for Brewarrina Central School’s new Executive Principal Jennifer Green.
Brewarrina is part of the Connected Communities strategy, which puts culture and community at the heart of school life.
“The Connected Communities Strategy is about working deeply with the community to impact educational outcomes for our young people, who are the future of their community,” Ms Green said.
Ms Green’s goal is to see young people engaged right through to Year 12 and said she had been welcomed in a spirit of hope, cooperation and sharing of wisdom.
"The community wishes to engage deeply about goals and aspirations for the young people of Brewarrina,” she said.
The former science teacher grew up in South-West Queensland and went to school in Roma.
She said it was a privilege to be so close to the Brewarrina Fish Traps, “the oldest continuing piece of working engineering on this planet” and to experience the “rich diverse ecology and biology” of the area.
“Cultural ways of working together are ancient in this area and multiple perspectives genuinely have kept this community energised,” she said.
“There is so much potential for that to translate into good outcomes for education.”
“I hope everyone coming through infants and primary school remains fully engaged in education all through high school,” she said.
“I hope everyone has a really strong vision for their post-school destination and is empowered with hope and the skill sets they need to achieve that goal – all with a strong cultural grounding.
“Strong culture leads to strong futures for our students.
“I see a real acknowledgment of the power of culture to transform lives.”
She has taught in Dunedoo and Coonamble, and was Boorawa Central School principal from 2009 and Queanbeyan High School principal from 2016, where she established an Aboriginal Education Centre.
