TSA - Planning lesson sequences

Equip teachers with the pedagogy and processes that underpin the design of effective lesson sequences.

This course will count towards Teacher Identified Professional Development (PD) hours (known as Elective PD under NESA’s new Accreditation of PD Courses Policy).

Description

For learning to occur deeply, students must connect ideas. Effective teachers recognise this when designing their lesson sequences: they connect new learning to prior understandings; they explore concepts logically in order for meaning to emerge; and they sequence activities to progress learning from a basic to a more complex skill level. This course aims to refine teachers’ skills in planning effective lesson sequences by taking them through the steps needed to create one.

There are four parts to this course. Various tasks require the teacher to apply what they have learnt in their school context as part of the course..

Outcomes

Teachers will learn to:

  • use evidence to make better judgements about improving student learning
  • use the four Quality Teaching questions to guide their planning of and reflection on classroom and assessment practice
  • use the Backward Design approach to sequence increasingly sophisticated, coherent lessons
  • space practice across a lesson sequence by chunking a central idea
  • scaffold learning using the Modelled, Guided and Independent Teaching model
  • find out what students know through effective questioning techniques, multi-student response systems and peer assessment.

Teaching practices

The following teaching practices are addressed in this course:

  • using effective teaching strategies
  • assessing learning and giving feedback
  • planning, structuring and sequencing lessons
  • evaluate teaching and learning.

Roles
