Assessing literacy and numeracy

There are a range of literacy and numeracy assessment tools to assist teachers in identifying what students can do and determine priorities for next steps in learning. These assessment tools are aligned with NSW syllabus outcomes and the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions.

Visit the Literacy and numeracy assessment resources web pages for more information regarding literacy and numeracy assessments including:

  • Best Start Kindergarten Assessment
  • Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
  • Interview for Student Reasoning
  • Check-in assessment
  • Diagnostic assessments

Resources are available to assist teachers to access and analyse assessment feedback, inform teaching and learning and communicate with parents and carers about student progress.

Literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and evidence-based resources on the Universal Resources Hub help teachers’ action feedback from these assessments and observations they make of student literacy and numeracy behaviours against the learning progressions.
