Eurovision excitement is bursting in the scholarly corridors of the NSW School of Languages, after HSC student Silia Kapsis wowed the judges this week to reach the final in Malmo, Sweden.

The Sydney student studies Modern Greek at the school but will sing and dance for Cyprus in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest final at the weekend.

Her language teacher, Sia Memtsas, is backing a social media charge in support of her student, who brings as much dedication to her studies as she does to the stage.

“I am in awe of her,” Ms Memtsas said.

“She is a dedicated student, so polite and humble. She never misses a class and is never late.”

Ms Memtsas said Silia had been humble about her progress to the Eurovision Song Contest finals.

“She is level-headed and focused,” Ms Memtsas said.

She said Silia brought that focus to everything she did and said the whole school was behind her.

Silia’s mother, Despina, said the support of the school was important to the family.

“We’re so thankful for the support for Silia. It means the world to Silia and I,” she told principal Teresa Naso.

Staff will be cheering in many languages when Silia performs her song ‘Liar’ in the final on Sunday morning. The Eurovision final will be broadcast live on SBS from 5am on 12 May.
