A collaboration involving students, staff, families and the community has seen John Hunter Hospital School release a new school song.
The song was launched at the start of the month amidst much fanfare.
Principal Amy Kurtz said the song was born from a desire to help people learn more about the school.
“The idea was sparked by Jane Hartcher, a staff member at the time, now a valued member of our P and C,” Ms Kurtz said.
“Jane believed that a school song could be a unique way to get our name out there. After all, everyone remembers a great song.”
The school collaborated with talented music therapist Abbey Coles from John Hunter Children’s Hospital to produce the catchy new jingle.
Ms Coles worked with the students to get quotes and ideas and then put the concepts to music and lyrics.
“We fine-tuned the song across various settings, including our Maitland and paediatric wards, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Ward, and, of course, in our school room,” Ms Kurtz said.
“Once the students were ready, we headed to the Hazy Cosmic Jive Studio with Gareth Hudson, where teacher Cathy Crowley directed our students as they recorded the track.”
The school also created a film clip to accompany the new song.
“Every great song deserves a great visual, and the NSW Department of Education’s Film By initiative gave us an opportunity to produce a video clip of our song,” Ms Kurtz said.
Film By empowers teachers and students to explore filmmaking, offering workshops, festivals, and professional learning.
Ms Kurtz said she hoped audiences would enjoy the song and film clip as much as staff and students had enjoyed putting them together.
“We are incredibly proud of the hard work, passion, and creativity that went into this project, a lasting legacy for John Hunter Hospital School,” she said.
