The local community has marked the ceremonial topping out at Green Square Public School and community spaces, as the structure of the new school reached its highest point and concrete work was completed last week.

The project will deliver the new Green Square Public School for families along with shared spaces that can be used by the South Sydney community, and has been jointly funded by the NSW Government and the City of Sydney.

Green Square Public School will feature 24 new classrooms, a library and canteen, staff rooms, administrative offices and amenities, a covered outdoor learning area (COLA) and Outside School Hours Care (OOSH) once completed in 2025.

Green Square Public School’s first student cohort will officially begin on Day 1 of Term 1, 2025, with students and staff temporarily located at Rainbow Street Public School, at 90 Rainbow St, Randwick, before moving to their new permanent school later in 2025.

The school will provide bus transport to and from Green Square to Rainbow Street Public School in the mornings and afternoons until the new site is ready. Transition to the new school building will take place once construction is completed.

The school’s shared spaces will allow for community use of spaces outside of school hours, with separate access points for schools and community use. This includes multipurpose spaces, a games court and adjacent courtyard, and a communal hall.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said:

“I am pleased to see the construction of Green Square Public School progressing.

“This school is set to become an important part of the Green Square community, and I look forward to seeing this new public school delivered.”

Member for Heffron Ron Hoenig said:

“It is wonderful to see works at our new school progressing. Now the structure is complete, works are set to begin on the school’s exterior and internal fit out.

“The school and community spaces will be finished before we know it, and I cannot wait to see students and teachers take advantage of these impressive new facilities upon opening.”

Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said:

“This innovative design will provide much-needed community facilities that will be activated day and night for the whole community to use. It is an important addition to the area’s educational, social and cultural life.

“By 2030, over 60,000 people will call Green Square home. The school will serve as a lynchpin that connects our award-winning library and civic plaza, and the Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre. By planning for the community’s needs alongside residential development, we are transforming Sydney’s oldest industrial heartland into a lively, connected and well-serviced community.”

Foundation Principal of Green Square Public School Ms Nicole Molloy said:

“I am excited to welcome students, parents, and teachers when they begin learning together in 2025.

“It’s an honour to be the first principal tasked with shaping this wonderful new school community.

“The ground floor of the school has been designed to foster connection with the broader community and includes dedicated multipurpose community spaces and areas that can be shared with the broader community at night and on weekends.

“It will be an absolute delight seeing it all come together.”
