Planning, programming and assessing history elective

Resources to help you plan, program and assess history elective in Years 7–10.

The History Elective Years 7–10 syllabus (2019) is designed to support students to develop an interest in and enjoyment of exploring the past.

It provides opportunities for students to develop deep knowledge and understanding of past societies and historical periods. Students explore the nature of history, heritage and archaeology, through processes of historical inquiry, analysing sources and sequencing events to demonstrate an understanding of continuity, change and causation.

Courses are structured in the following ways:

A 100-hour course

  • one option from each of topics 1, 2 and 3 must be studied.

A 200-hour course

  • one option from each of topics 1, 2 and 3 and at least two other options from any of the topics.

Sample learning sequence

This is a complete learning sequence for Topic 1: History, Heritage and Archaeology. The focus is on underwater archaeology.
