2024 Kindergarten transition programs: Starting school safely
Starting school is an exciting and significant milestone for both children and their families. How a child travels to and from school is a parent/carer’s responsibility – however schools want this to happen as safely as possible, every day.
31 January 2024
2024 Kindergarten orientation days and information sessions provide a great opportunity for schools to promote safe road user behaviours to new families.
These behaviours may include parent/carers:
- holding their child’s hand when walking on the footpath, in the car park and when crossing the road.
- using the safest place to cross the road.
- walking further to use pedestrian crossings, refuges and traffic lights.
- meeting and dropping their child on the school side of the road (never calling childing from across the road)
- getting their child in and out of the car via the ‘safety door’ (the rear left door closest to the footpath)
- buckling their child up correctly in an approved child restraint or booster seat that is right for their age and size.
- driving and parking legally, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school.
The Road Safety Education team have developed a range of resources to support schools with developing school-specific road safety advice to new parents/carers.
Starting school safely - road safety parent and carer presentation (ppt)
This editable presentation supports schools with providing clear, school-specific road safety information to parents and carers, to ensure their child's safe transition to kindergarten.
Kindergarten orientation road safety library bags
This calico library bag contains a height chart, bus safety information, key road safety messages, a ‘safety door’ sticker, activity sheets for children, a pack of coloured pencils. Consider adding additional school resources to the bag and distribute these during 2024 Kindergarten orientation sessions.
Schools can order free library bags for 2024 Kindergarten enrolments, as well as brochures and posters directly from Transport for NSW.
Go to a Starting school safely: transition to Kindergarten to find additional resources to support families, such as:
- Road safety information for parents and carers flyer – an editable template that supports student safety when travelling to and from school. Schools are encouraged to add school-specific information and share with new families.
- Ideas for sharing road safety information with families – information for teachers and the coordinator of transition programs.
- Getting to and from school safely – information to share with parents.
