Student behaviour

Promoting the learning, wellbeing and safety of all students in NSW public schools is a high priority.

Schools implement teaching and learning approaches to support the development of skills needed by their students to meet high standards for respectful, safe and engaged behaviour.

Collaboration between staff, students and parents/carers is fundamental to maintaining positive student behaviour in schools.

The Behaviour Code for Students outlines the standards of behaviour expected in all NSW public schools.

Support for student behaviour

School and classroom support

Schools have a range of resources to support their students, including those experiencing difficulty in learning or behaviour.

Individual, class and whole-school teaching and learning approaches support the development of skills needed by students to meet high standards for respectful, safe and engaged behaviour.

Each school has a learning support team which reviews policies and practices used to maintain high standards of student behaviour, and implements intervention strategies for students with additional behaviour needs.

The school counselling staff can provide expertise in the assessment of students, and supporting teachers with management strategies for both the classroom and playground.

Some schools have wellbeing services such as student support officers and specialist teachers to assist in improving the engagement of individual students and the broader school environment.

School staff can access a range of professional learning programs related to supporting student behaviour via MyPL and the Supported Online Learning Program.

Educational services support

Public schools can draw on the expertise of more than 4000 specialist staff, including counselling services, specialists in learning and behaviour, and more than 100 specialist behaviour settings across NSW.

Specialist behaviour education settings provide additional support for students with severely disruptive or complex behaviour.

  • Learning centres provide a range of specialist programs for students with severely disruptive behaviours in Years 5-10 with the aim of returning the students to regular schools or supporting their transition to other education or employment opportunities.
  • Tutorial centres provide an age appropriate short-term intervention for students in Years 5 to 10 with severely disruptive behaviours, who require intensive and significant levels of intervention that cannot be provided within a mainstream or support class setting.
  • Suspension centres provide an intervention for students who are on long suspension from school and have been identified by their school as likely to benefit from a structured program to assist their successful return to schooling as soon as possible.
