Interpreting vocabulary

Building vocabulary knowledge beyond frequently used core words, allows students to understand written texts with more complex and academic terminology. Vocabulary development is interconnected with reading development, whereby the improvement in one leads to an improvement in the other.

An effective way to improve students' vocabulary is to assist performance by engaging in dialogue with students to mediate understanding. This dialogue will scaffold their language through the feedback from teacher to student, and from student to teacher when new wording is adopted (Dufficy 2005).
