Wider than Gwydir
This school journey highlights how Warialda Public School is leading a community of schools in North-Western NSW to broaden future horizons through industry partnerships and technology.
Location: Hope St, Warialda
Level: Primary School, Kinder to Year 6
Enrolment: 182 students
Warialda Public School is located within north western NSW and is one of the oldest schools in the state being established in 1851. Our school has a current enrolment of 185 students who attend from the township of Warialda and the surrounding rural areas of the Gwydir Shire. Our school community works together to inspire students to develop a passion for learning, to assist students to achieve personal success in all endeavours and to enable them to become engaged 21st century learners and citizens who act with integrity.
Our school is leading a strong and sustainable middle years initiative across a community of schools within the Barwon Principal Network. This innovative project is called Wider than Gwydir. Students from across a community of schools participate in a videoconference each fortnight where they have the opportunity to hear from and interact with an industry professional who talks about their unique career journey. These opportunities have been carefully planned and have included dynamic presentations from industry experts in the fields of the arts, science, technology, engineering, innovation and design, animal sciences, research, aviation and the health sciences.
Students completed a survey to establish baseline data at the commencement of the program in 2016. A survey was then completed at the conclusion of the academic year to establish exit data. The results clearly demonstrated the significant impact of the project. Students demonstrated their ability to confidently discuss a much broader range of careers and deeper engagement discussing concepts about their future.
Wider than Gwydir is successfully broadening the minds and future horizons of students in the middle years through dynamic industry partnerships and online collaboration.
