Schools must refer to the ACE website and the NESA official notices for details of their responsibilities to meet the requirements for the award of the Higher School Certificate, including satisfactory completion of a course and appeals.

See Registration Process for the NSW Government Schooling System Manual.

Advice for principals

Schools will be asked to show evidence of procedures, which comply with the requirements documented on the ACE website and NESA official notices. Specifically:

  • details of the school’s assessment program for all Stage 6 courses delivered by the school, giving the number and types of assessment tasks, components and weightings and scheduling of tasks
  • The school’s administrative arrangements for:
    • absence from assessment tasks
    • late submissions due to illness or misadventure
    • malpractice
    • invalid or unreliable tasks
    • student appeals against assessment rankings
    • ‘N’ determinations.

Evidence to provide at the random inspection

These three, key questions will help schools to collate evidence:

  • For each Stage 6 course, is the following information clearly communicated to students, staff and parents?
    • assessment plan/schedule
    • the number of assessments as per the ACE manual and stronger HSC standards
    • types of assessments
    • components
    • weightings.
  • Are the school’s Higher School Certificate administrative arrangements clearly communicated to staff, students and parents?
  • Is there evidence of implementation of the following procedures as relevant?:
    • absence from an assessment task
    • late submissions due to illness or misadventure
    • malpractice
    • invalid or unreliable tasks
    • student appeals against assessment rankings
    • ‘N’ determinations.
