Planning lesson sequences

For learning to occur deeply, students must connect ideas. Effective teachers recognise this when designing their lesson sequences: they connect new learning to prior understandings; they explore concepts logically in order for meaning to emerge; and they sequence activities to progress learning from a basic to a more complex skill level. This course aims to refine your skill in planning effective lesson sequences by taking you through the steps needed to create one.
Completing Planning lesson sequences will contribute 12 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
Once you have completed the course, in line with the course conditions specified, your NESA Registered Professional Development hours will be automatically transferred to your NESA record.
You will learn to:
- use evidence to make better judgements about improving student learning
- use the four Quality Teaching questions to guide your planning of and reflection on classroom and assessment practice
- use the Backward Design approach to sequence increasingly sophisticated, coherent lessons
- space practice across a lesson sequence by chunking a central idea
- scaffold learning using the Modelled, Guided and Independent Teaching model
- find out what students know through effective questioning techniques, multi-student response systems and peer assessment.
