Leadership Development Initiative - Highly Accomplished Teacher FAQs

Who can apply?

Participants: Highly effective classroom teachers

Mentors: School executive staff from the participant’s school (expert principals, deputy principals, assistant principals, head teachers and suitably accredited teachers) seeking to support leadership development and to improve their understanding of how to support others to gain Highly Accomplished Teacher accreditation. Mentors must also be prepared to commit for a year.

Note: The principal nominates the mentor from within the participant's school.

How will I know if I’m ready to undertake Highly Accomplished Teacher accreditation?

Refer to the Instructional Leadership Reflection Tool (ILRT) at Highly Accomplished Teacher which provides examples of professional practice. These are mapped against the standards at the Highly Accomplished Teacher career stage.

Am I eligible to apply for LDI/HA if I have already registered with NESA for Highly Accomplished Teacher accreditation?

Yes. We encourage candidates to apply for LDI/HA when you are undertaking NESA Highly Accomplished Teacher accreditation.

Does my current principal have to endorse my application as a participant in LDI/HA?

Yes. This is not only a NESA requirement but also a requirement of the initiative. Your principal will oversee your accreditation. Throughout the process he/she will be required to write references and observation reports about you.

When will I find out if have been successful in gaining an LDI/HA grant?

The selection process will commence after 4 December 2017 and successful candidates will be informed via email by Tuesday, 12 December 2017.

If I am successful in gaining an LDI/HA grant when will I need to register for NESA Highly Accomplished Teacher accreditation?

LDI/HA participants should complete NESA registration at the Highly Accomplished Teacher career stage by 4 May 2018 (end of Week 1, Term 2).

Do I need to complete the Instructional Leadership Reflection Tool (ILRT) at the Highly Accomplished Teacher career stage?

Yes. This is an important part of LDI/HA. The ILRT has a purpose during the LDI and in supporting your accreditation process. The ILRT:

  • will be discussed with your principal as a basis for professional dialogue around areas of professional learning
  • will be used with your mentor to discuss your progress during your accreditation phase
  • is a useful standards map to support you to keep track of your accumulating evidence.

Where will the grant money go and what will it cover?

The grant will be placed in your school’s account. Participants can access it from there.

The grant can be spent on NESA registration fees, costs involved in attending conferences (accommodation, travel and casual relief) and attendance at mentoring activities and ‘writing’ days.

Note: Metropolitan primary school staff are not eligible for a grant but are welcome to apply, on the condition they are school-funded.

What sort of financial accountability documentation do I need to provide during my participation in the initiative?

In the LDI Completion and Evaluation Survey, you will be asked to identify how you spent your LDI grant. Your response will assist us in future planning.

When do I have to spend the LDI grant funds?

It is expected that most of your grant money will expended within the first year.

What do I do if I need to withdraw from the LDI throughout the year and am I required to pay the grant money back?

If you cannot complete the initiative for any reason please contact the LDI Project co-ordinators, Jayne Schmarr and Anne Larkin, for advice. Any unspent LDI funds will be recouped by the Leadership and High Performance directorate.

What if I don’t require mentor support?

It is a requirement of the program that you engage with the appointed mentor as nominated by your principal from within your school.

The appointed mentor will participate in mentor training and all conferences. They will be able to provide objective advice and feedback to support you throughout the LDI process. The mentor is an important resource to help you on your way to accreditation.

Additionally, the mentor’s role is not only to support you, but also to build DoE leadership capacity by increasing the number of executives who can support teachers across our system to gain Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher accreditation.

What happens if my relationship with my mentor is not productive?

Issues between mentors and participants should be discussed and resolved at the school level with your principal. Your principal may seek the support of the LDI co-ordinators if necessary.

What help and support for accreditation is available to participants and mentors in addition to the LDI?

Teacher Quality Advisors will be able to provide advice and support on accreditation requirements and processes. The Teaching Standards in Action site provides clear practical information and courses aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

In addition, the Leadership Pathways site has many annotated examples of leadership practice mapped against the standards at the higher career stages.
