These detailed programs offer a 2-week unit that builds student skills. School staff exercise professional judgement when making decisions about the suitability of teaching and learning activities to meet the needs of their students.
Early Stage 1
The role of narrative in the creative arts
Students explore the role of narrative in the creative arts to evoke meaning in artworks.
The character of the arts
In Lesson 1 students explore music and drama using nursery rhymes as an initial stimulus. In Lesson 2 they investigate selected visual artworks and examine the role of character and place in creating identity. Students interpret the role of character across the creative arts to help shape meaning in compositions and artworks.
Connotation, imagery and symbol in the arts
In Lesson 1 students explore the symbolic role of images in communicating understandings about Australia’s environment and culture. In Lesson 2 they investigate selected pop art in visual arts and examine the imagery and hidden meanings within. Students identify and interpret these hidden meanings across the creative arts. This is then used to examine mass production and advertising through the stimulus of a music study of nursery rhymes.
Stage 1

Students explore the role of narrative in the creative arts to evoke meaning in artworks in visual arts, dance and drama.
How does character help us to learn more about art and music?
A focus is placed on the concept of character to help students analyse musical concepts as presented in nursery rhymes. Emphasis is placed on how character is reinforced in musical concepts beyond just an exploration of the lyrics. In visual artworks character in the form of figurative painting is explored and fictitious super-heroes form the basis of this exploration.

In Lesson 2 they investigate selected visual artworks and musical compositions to examine the imagery and hidden meanings within. Students will then identify and interpret these hidden meanings across the creative arts, particularly through connecting music and visual arts.

Students explore the role of narrative in the creative arts to evoke meaning in artworks in music, visual arts, drama and dance.
How does character inform the arts?
This lesson sequence enables students to explore character primarily in visual arts and music. Additional focus is on facial expression, movement, mime and non-locomotor body formation. Students will learn to sing a song about mythical creatures and create a composition about that character. Through an examination of figurative drawing and sculpting, students will also create their own mythical creature sculptures, explore shadows and movement, then create and draw ‘human’ action figures.

In this learning sequence students will explore the role of character in helping to understand and interpret the creative arts. Students will investigate and learn to make compositions and artworks with an emphasis on character.
