Science
These detailed units of work offer 2-4 weeks of learning activities and associated resources that can adapted to suit the context of your students.
Units of work
Stage 4
Energy (5 hours)
In this unit students will develop working scientifically skills and their understanding of sound energy and energy transformations.
States of matter (4 hours)
In this unit, students develop an understanding of the properties of solids, liquids and gases and how these can be explained by the particle model of matter, motion and energy.

Working scientifically and physical world - the cooling rate of water (1-2 hours)
Students plan and undertake an investigation into what affects the cooling rate of hot water.

Stage 5
Calculating the speed of light using a microwave (2-3 hours)
In this unit students will use a microwave to analyse microwave electromagnetic radiation and approximate the speed of light. Students can submit an experimental report that documents their activity and the results obtained.
Going nuclear (3-4 hours)
In this unit students are guided to complete a short investigation into the considerations of siting a nuclear power station and then submitting a brief report and reflection.

Human impact on global systems (3-4 hours)
In this unit, students will develop their scientific knowledge about global patterns of geological activity. They will learn how interactions involving global systems can be used to inform decisions related to contemporary issues.

Sound waves (2-3 hours)
In this unit students will explore energy transfer through different mediums using wave and particle models.

Distance education resources
Stage 4-5 distance education resources developed to support students working off campus. The Distance education network offers these documents to support teachers delivering off-campus learning. They are not designed for all learning contexts and are not anticipated to address all syllabus outcomes. Curriculum experts are reviewing them and when quality-assured versions are available they will be highlighted.
While the resources support independent student study, they must be used in consultation with their subject teacher.
