Creative writing
Pobble365 (K-6) Online daily visuals that can be used as stimulus materials for teaching creative writing, grammar and speaking and listening.
Khan Academy – Storytelling (5-6) Virtual sequenced narrative course with videos, activities and quizzes. Can automatically integrate with Google Classroom if logged in with DET google identity. US-based and Disney content.
The kid should see this (K-6) Free collection of over 4,300 kid-friendly videos, curated for teachers and parents to share meaningful media in the classroom. Useful as a writing prompt for informative, persuasive and imaginative texts.
Literacy Shed (K-6) A range of free digital reading and multimedia materials that can be used as stand-alone lessons or can support literacy units already in place.
Taronga TV (K-6) For great writing stimulus, visit Sydney Taronga and Western Plains Zoos TV. They offer a series of zoo-keeper talks, which are updated regularly and live-cameras rotate through a number of sites, allowing us unprecedented, up-close access to elephants, meerkats, seals and tigers.
Reading/Listening
Storyline Online (K-6) Videos featuring celebrated actors reading children's books alongside cartoon illustrations. This resource can be used to build listening skills as well as an appreciation of emotive language.
Kids News (2-6) Newspaper articles for teachers using current daily news. The content is written into educational stories in child-appropriate language and filtered/censored to remove any inappropriate content or imagery.
Specific Learning Difficulties Association - Phonics Books (K-1) Books grouped in a developing order based on the order of sounds introduced. Each book is published with suggestions for how to use them aimed at parents and teachers.
Scholastic Kids Press (3-6) A group of children reporters, from across the USA and around the world. The young journalists report "news for kids, by kids," covering politics, entertainment, the environment, sports, and more in their hometowns and on the national stage.
