The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life. Skills in the Year 3-4 curriculum include:

  • recognising and using verbs and adverbs.

It’s easy to help your child practise this skill as part of everyday life – just use these simple ideas.

Hunt for interesting words

Have you ever held a Word Hunt Challenge with your child? It's a great way to develop your child's vocabulary while having fun - just pick a theme, set a timeframe, and decide whether to make it a competition or a collaborative challenge:

  • Who can find the most new nouns this week?
  • Let's see how many new adjectives we can find in our books this week. Do you think we can get to twenty?

For maximum benefit, make it a weekly challenge, with a different theme each week. Start with broad themes such as 'verbs', ‘adverbs’, ‘adjectives’, then introduce more specific themes, such as:

  • verbs about moving
  • adverbs related to eating
  • adjectives about feelings
  • nouns to describe scenery
  • words about weather
  • adjectives starting with ‘m’.

Then watch your child's vocabulary blossom as they pay new attention to the words in books, brochures, movies and magazines!
