Example rap video

  1. Before you start

Make sure your child has everything ready that they will need at the start of the lesson including a print out of the lyrics or the lyrics on screen.

Check that the videos and audio files are working and that the volume is turned up on your device.

Discuss with your child:

  • How important is looking after the environment to our household?

  • What do we do to look after the environment in our household?

  • How good are we at reducing waste in our family?

  • What do we know about rap music?

  • Watch an episode of ABC’s ‘War on Waste’. Discuss what this means for the environment.

  1. What your child needs to know and do

  1. Play the ‘Rubbish Rap’ and listen to the words. You can read along with the lyrics.

  2. Keep the beat like the students in this video (click here to access) as you listen to the rap. Practise performing it.

  3. Discuss what the meaning of the rap is and what you do as a household to cut back on waste.

  4. Practise the shortened version of ‘Rubbish Rap’.

    1. What to do next

  1. Watch this video on how to make new end rhymes for a rap. Have a go using the techniques shown in the lesson.

  2. Make a new verse for ‘Rubbish Rap’ using your own theme or about what you do in your household to cut back on household waste. There are 8 lines to each verse and there are 4 beats in each line. Lines 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 rhyme together. There is a tag line after line 8 which remains the same “It’s not a load of rubbish”. Copy and paste a verse from the lyrics sheet and then change the words as you go. Alternatively you can write ideas down on paper.

  3. Use the shortened backing track to practise the new rap. Record it for fun!

    1. Options for your child

Activity too hard? Activity too easy?

Rather than making a full verse, focus on creating 4 lines rather than 8. Therefore, lines 1-2 and 3-4 will rhyme.

Create two entirely new rap verses using the shortened backing track included.

  1. Extend the learning

Record your own rap. This can be done using either the rap just created or using the ‘Rubbish Rap’ as is. An example of a video clip created by the students of Gymea Bay Public School can be viewed for inspiration. Follow the instructions on how to develop this yourself within the Vocal Ease MORE (Module 1) video clip module within the resource.

‘Rubbish Rap’

  1. By Tracy and Paul Burjan with Zain Ousmand

Chorus

Ooo, ahhh, Rubbish Rap,

Take that wrap and toss that scrap,

Flip that lid right on the bin,

Check, recycle, throw it in.

Be proactive, make a change,

Rethink your ways, it’s not so strange.

Ooo, Ahhh, Rubbish Rap,

Listen to me, now let’s recap,

It’s not a load of rubbish.

Verse 1

Crack down, back up,

Reuse that coffee cup.

Cups up, cups down, got one at home.

It’s so easy to bring your own.

Change, exchange don’t throw it out,

Reuse those clothes without a doubt.

Don’t toss those threads, sew them again,

Cut them up and start a trend.

It’s not a load of rubbish.

Verse 2

Plastic bags aren't so cool,

Take your own bag as a rule.

Think of the future down the track,

You’ll get the knack so don’t be slack.

Crunchy plastics can be reused,

It’s not so hard, don’t look confused.

Think before you throw it in,

Reuse, recycle that’s a win!

It’s not a load of rubbish.

Verse 3

Save our planet from all that waste,

Use your bins, at home base

Red for rubbish, yellow for paper.

Green to mulch up all that nature.

Composting can be so cool,

Start a compost at your school.

Watch the worms as they are fed,

Chuck it on the garden bed.

It’s not a load of rubbish.

Chorus (twice)

Ooo, ahhh, Rubbish Rap,

Take that wrap and toss that scrap,

Flip that lid right on the bin,

Check, recycle, throw it in.

Be proactive and make a change,

Rethink your ways, it’s not so strange.

Ooo, ahhh, Rubbish Rap,

Listen to me, and, that’s that!
