Things you need

How to make a pirate hat

Bandana, small bath towel or tea towel

Blank sheets of paper or workbook

Pencils or pens

Pencils are best, but can use any other writing tools such as textas, pens or crayons.

Before you start

Make sure your child has everything ready that they will need at the start of the lesson.

Check that the videos are working and that the volume is turned up on your device.

Discuss with your child:

  • Do you know what a pirate is?

  • Can you name any pirates?

  • Are they real?

What your child needs to know and do

Watch the Pirate School video.


  • The interesting things that you found out from watching the video.

  • How did you feel when you were watching the video?

  • Why do pirates look ‘scary’?

  • What is it about their appearance that makes them seem that way?

  • What is the best and worst thing about being a pirate?

What to do next

  1. Print the worksheet on pirates clothing (found below). Read through the words at the bottom of the page.

  2. Discuss where these words might be written to label the pirate’s clothing. Ask your child to point to the different parts of the pirates.

  3. Help your child write the words near the correct location on the pirate.

  4. Add a background and colour the picture.

Options for your child

Activity too hard? Activity too easy?

Draw arrows to label the pirate’s clothing.

Have your child verbalise the sentences while you write them.

Assist with writing three sentences to describe the pirate’s appearance.

Create a short story about the pirate that was labelled. Make sure the story has a beginning, middle and end.

Use words from the list below to label this picture of the pirate:

Colour the picture, add a background and draw a scar on his face. On the back of the paper or on another piece of paper, write three sentences to describe the appearance of your pirate.
