Package 1 - Year 1 and 2 Mathematics - One big triangle
This task will encourage strategies for working out numbers that combine to make 10.
Week 4 - Package 1 - Year 1 and 2 Mathematics - One big triangle (from NRICH maths)
Things you need
Have these things available so your child can complete this task.
Draw the triangles on a piece of paper and copy the numbers from the attached document.
Before you start
The game requires mathematical thinking and the child should be given sufficient time to wonder about and explore ideas.
Print out the 9 triangles documents.
What your child needs to know and do
The child should have some strategies for working out numbers that combine to make 10, including knowing some number facts.
What to do next
Print the page with 9 triangles.
Cut out the triangles carefully.
Now arrange these triangles to make one big triangle, so that the numbers that touch add up to 10.
Options for your child
Activity too hard?
Use the page with the triangles with numbers represented in ten frames. These can help the child visually match the numbers that complete the ten-frame.
Allow the child to make a bigger triangle only using 4 triangles.
Activity too easy?
Different numbers can be written on the triangles with an aim of making a bigger triangle so that the numbers that touch add up to 15, or 20 etc.
The same activity can be done with an aim of making other shapes like a square or trapezium, using the triangles.
