What to do next

Write numbers 1-5 on a page and ask the following questions: • What do you think comes next? Why?

• If I continued writing the counting numbers in order but stopped for a rest after writing seventeen digits. What was the last number I wrote?

• If I carry on until I get all the way up to the number 20, How many digits have I written altogether now?

• Can you find a way to work this out without writing the counting numbers yourself?
