Things you need

Have these things available so your child can complete this task.

Ideal

  • A piece of paper

  • Pencil or markers

Before you start

This game comes from NRICH maths at Cambridge University. The game can be found here at the NRICH website. This game provides meaningful practice of writing and ordering the numbers from 1 to 20.

What your child needs to know and do

This task is great for supporting a child’s understanding of number sequences and can be played with any number range.

What to do next

Write numbers 1-5 on a page and ask the following questions:

Image of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 written on a piece of paper.

  • What do you think comes next? Why?

  • If I continued writing the counting numbers in order but stopped for a rest after writing seventeen digits. What was the last number I wrote?

  • If I carry on until I get all the way up to the number 20, How many digits have I written altogether now?

  • Can you find a way to work this out without writing the counting numbers yourself?

Options for your child

Activity too hard?

Provide the child with a ruler with numbers clearly marked on it to use as a prompt.

Activity too easy?

Start with a series of 2-digit numbers like 21,22, 23.

Extension/additional activity

The same activity can be played by using skip counting number sequences like 2,4,8,10… or 5,10, 15, 20…..
