Why is this activity important?

Counting involves more than just saying the number words. Children also need to be able to match the words they say when they count to the symbols and the quantity (the amount).

Before you start

• Get all of the resources ready.

• Then, count together.

What to do next

Students can also view the videos on their own. Where possible, view the first and last minute with them so you can help them get started.

If you like, you're welcome to sit with your child as they watch the videos. You can talk with them about their thinking. You can also have them work with another person at home.

Activity too hard? Activity too easy?

Watch video again. Your child may simply need another opportunity to think about these mathematical ideas.

Work with numbers in their range, for example, numbers 1-5.

Change the number you explore. For example, Work with numbers up to 12 or 30 or beyond.
