Zoom roles

The roles available within Zoom change depending on whether you are in a a meeting or a webinar.

Zoom meeting

Host

The host in a Zoom meeting is the person who scheduled the meeting (or had it scheduled on their behalf via schedule privilege). Hosts have full control over management of the meeting. Hosts can assign alternative hosts prior to the meeting, and co-hosts during the meeting. Only hosts can manage breakout rooms, create and edit polls, end meetings for all participants and assign people to enter closed captions. If a host needs to leave a meeting, they can nominate who will take over as host when they leave. A host can restrict the ability for a participant to record a meeting or chat.

Alternate host

Alternate hosts are nominated during the scheduling of a meeting. An alternate host have all of the same rolls as a co-host, but they can also start the meeting. An alternate host can restrict the ability for a participant to record a meeting or chat.

Co-host

A co-host cannot be nominated prior to a meeting. The host can nominate co-hosts during the meeting. Co-hosts have many of the roles that a host has, however they cannot end the meeting for all, manage breakout rooms or polls or promote someone else to co-host. A co-host can restrict the ability for a participant to record a meeting or chat.

Participants

Participants in a meeting will have varying abilities depending on the settings the host has applied. A participant can record a meeting to their own device if the host has given permission in the settings. Only a participant can start their own video. Participants microphones can be turned on my hosts and co-hosts. Depending on the permissions set by the host, a participant can view the participant list, respond to polls, enter reactions and nonverbal feedback, chat with other participants, share their screen, view the list of participants, give remote control and invite others to join the meeting.

Zoom webinar

Host

The host in a Zoom webinar is the person who scheduled the webinar (or had it scheduled on their behalf via schedule privilege). Hosts have full control over management of the webinar. There can only be one host per webinar. Hosts can assign alternative hosts prior to the webinar, and co-hosts during the webinar. Only hosts can manage breakout rooms, create and edit polls, end webinars for all panelists and assign people to enter closed captions. If a host needs to leave a webinar, they can nominate who will take over as host when they leave. A host can restrict the ability for a panelist to record a webinar or chat. Hosts can join in a practice session prior to the broadcasting of a webinar. Hosts can begin the broadcasting of the webinar. Only the host can live stream a webinar.

Alternate host

Alternate hosts are nominated during the scheduling of a webinar. An alternate host have all of the same rolls as a co-host, but they can also start the webinar. Alternate hosts can join in a practice session prior to the broadcasting of a webinar.

Co-host

A co-host cannot be nominated prior to a webinar. The host can nominate co-hosts during the webinar. Co-hosts have many of the roles that a host has, however they cannot assign new co-hosts or put panellists on hold. Co-hosts can begin the broadcasting of the webinar.

Panelists

Panelists in a webinar are full participants. Depending on the settings assigned by the host, they can share their video and their screen. A panellist can annotate a presentation or screenshare. Panellists can be added prior to the webinar, however the same person cannot be added as a panellist and an alternate host. Panellists can join in a practice session prior to the broadcasting of a webinar. Panellist have no control over participants other than to invite new participants.

Attendees

Attendees are view only participants in a webinar. With appropriate permissions, they can participate in the chat, polls and the Q&A.
