A range of handbooks, publications and brochures are available to assist students, parents and carers, and schools.

From assessment to programming: Assisting students requiring additional support in reading

From assessment to programming has been designed to assist school learning support teams to develop whole school plans for improving the reading achievements of all students. It is intended for use with students:

  • from stage 1 onwards who are performing below their age/stage level
  • who scored in the bottom 2 bands of NAPLAN for their year
  • who were absent for NAPLAN (if causing concern).

Writing and spelling strategies: Assisting students who have additional learning needs

This practical resource can assist teachers to develop and adjust teaching strategies and class programs to meet the needs of learners experiencing difficulties with spelling and writing.

Programming and strategies handbook (primary): Assisting Year 3 and Year 5 students who need additional support in literacy

This support document will assist teachers to make appropriate adjustments across Key Learning Areas for students needing additional support in literacy. It also provides strategies for developing the reading ability of students still struggling to read the words on a page.

Programming and strategies handbook (secondary): Assisting Year 7 students who need additional support in literacy

This support document provides instructional techniques for both the learning and support teacher and Key Learning Area (KLA) teachers. It contains strategies for developing the reading ability of students still struggling to read the words on the page. It has extensive sections on comprehension that support the collaborative teaching model of KLA and learning and support teachers in the classroom.

Jill Sherlock Memorial Learning Assistance Library

The Jill Sherlock Memorial Learning Assistance Library is an initiative of the NSW Department of Education and Communities and the Jill Sherlock Memorial Trust.

This state facility provides resources to teachers, allied professionals and parents to support the teaching and learning needs of students with learning difficulties, in the context of syllabus and curriculum requirements.

DVDs

Auditory Skills Program for Students with Hearing Impairment

This resource is a systematic step by step program designed for teachers to develop speech and language through listening in their students with hearing impairment from kindergarten to upper primary. Aspects of the program can be adapted to maintain listening skills for students in the secondary environment.

Critical Bridges

The Critical Bridges DVD deals with education and transitional stages experienced by people with disability. Hosted by the Disability Council of NSW and the NSW Department of Education and Communities, this six hour series brings together people with a great deal of personal and professional experience to discuss, debate and inform us about three important stages of educational transition:

  • transition to school
  • re-adjustment after acquiring a disability later in life
  • transitioning to post-school destinations.
