Windows 10 Ease of Access video transcript


"To support your student's access to their learning they may need to make adjustments to their computer or laptop display or settings. Most NSW public schools have updated their computers and laptops to run Windows 10, which has a range of built in accessibility settings that can be used to support a student's individual needs. The accessibility features have been significantly updated from previous versions of Windows. They can be found in the Ease of Access centre which is easily found using the search bar or asking Cortana, if the student has difficulty typing or spelling. They can also search for a specific setting that needs adjusting.

So let's see what is available in the ease of access centre.

You will see that there is quick access to some of the common tools such as the magnifier, Narrator which is the updated screen reader which is worth trying out, on screen keyboard and high contrast settings. There are a range of other settings for optimising the computer for people who are blind, optimising the visual display, using the computer without a mouse or keyboard, making the keyboard and mouse easier to use, making it easier to focus on tasks and many others.

A good practice to do with your student is to select the option that says 'get recommendations to make your computer easier to use'.

Here you will be taken through a range of questions that will help to identify the specific needs of the student and it will match these needs with some suggested accessibility settings that can be chosen for them.

You can then personalise the settings for the student by testing some of the recommendations and seeing what is going to work best for them.

In some cases the accessibility features provided in Windows 10 may not be enough for your student and they may require some additional assistive technology, but this is a great place to start as these are free and easily available on the computers and laptops in your school.
